BANAT - Historical Region of Romania

Placed among the Meridional Carpathians, the Danube, the Tisa and the Mures rivers, Banat historical province has as main towns Timisoara, Arad, Resita and Lugoj and the relief composed of a mountain area in the east and south (a part of the Poiana Rusca, Tarcu, Godeanu, Mehedinti Mountains and Almajului and Semenic Mountains) covered by large forests and pastures, a meadow area in the centre (the west part of the area of the Tisa plain). The climate of the region is milder than in the influences of the mediterranean climate are obvious; for instance, there grows the wild lilac. It is an area with various oare deposits and thermal (Herculane Baths) or cold (Buzias, Lipova) mineral springs, as well as with the greates marble exploiting in the country (at Ruschita).
